What to Wear to a Family Portrait Session

Family photographer

One of the most common questions I hear from clients after they’ve booked their family portrait session is, “What should we wear?” Dressing your family for photos can be quite a task, especially when you want everyone to look coordinated without being too matchy-matchy. Additionally, ensuring your kids are comfortable is crucial to avoid complaints and impatience. Parents, we understand it’s a lot to navigate!

Luckily, it’s not as complicated as it might seem. To assist you, I’ve compiled some tips on dressing your entire family for those precious portraits.

Opt for Neutral Tones

Bright colors may be appealing, but they’re not universally flattering and can be tricky to coordinate. Stick to neutral colors that blend seamlessly together. Neutrals provide a timeless look and eliminate the risk of clashing bright colors that might divert attention from your faces.

Experiment with Patterns and Layers

Steering clear of bright colors doesn’t mean your photos have to be bland. Incorporate patterns like stripes, plaid, or florals, as they pair well with denim and solid colors. Adding layers, such as jackets, cardigans, scarves, or hats, not only adds visual interest but also allows for different looks without a full outfit change.

Try Outfits in Advance

Before the family portrait session, have everyone try on their chosen outfits, especially if they’re new. Ensure the overall look is cohesive and suits each family member. Different fits are acceptable, as long as they flatter individual body types. Remember, a well-fitted outfit enhances the overall appearance.

Prioritize Comfort and Movement

While you want your family to look adorable, prioritize comfort, especially for the kids. Unhappy children can lead to tantrums or reluctant smiles, which is best avoided. Opt for simple, comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement, ensuring your kids can play and have fun during the session.

Avoid Graphics and Logos

It might be a challenge, but steering clear of graphic tees and clothing with logos or brand names is essential. These elements distract from smiling faces and draw attention away from the main focus of your photos.

Ensure Your Comfort Too

Don’t forget about your own comfort amidst focusing on your children’s attire. If opting for a dress or skirt, ensure it’s of adequate length for easy movement and comfortable posing. Try on your outfit beforehand, moving around to confirm you have a full range of motion. Avoid itchy fabrics or anything that might cause discomfort during the session.

A bit of planning can go a long way in choosing outfits that make your entire family look fantastic. This way, you’ll capture photos you’ll cherish for years to come!
