A Beautiful Same-Sex Wedding at The Plough & Barn at Leigh

Crystal & Courtney’s Same-Sex Wedding at The Plough & Barn at Leigh reminded me why wedding photography has never been just about beautiful photographs. Instead, it’s about creating an environment where every couple feels comfortable enough to be completely themselves. After their wedding, they sent me a review containing one sentence I’ll never forget: “We felt seen, respected and celebrated.” As I looked back through their photographs, I realised those few words perfectly captured every part of their day.

A Same-Sex Wedding at The Plough & Barn at Leigh Filled With Joy

Every wedding has its own story. However, Crystal and Courtney’s began long before they stood together beneath the outdoor gazebo at The Plough & Barn.

One of my favourite stories from the day was how Courtney’s first impression of Crystal couldn’t have been more wrong. When they first met, Courtney famously said, “Don’t employ her, I don’t like her.” Seven years later, those same two people stood hand in hand, surrounded by the family and friends who had watched their relationship grow into something extraordinary.

They had actually chosen me long before the wedding day. When they visited The Plough & Barn at Leigh to view the venue’s photo book I created, they saw my work alongside another photographer’s. As they later told me, they knew instantly, just from looking at the photographs, that I was the person they wanted to capture their day.

From the moment guests arrived, there was an overwhelming sense that everyone belonged. Parents, siblings, lifelong friends and evening guests all played their part. Consequently, the day never felt like a timetable of events. Instead, it felt like a celebration shared by every person there.

The outdoor ceremony reflected exactly who Crystal and Courtney are. They smiled constantly, laughed together and never stopped looking at one another. Meanwhile, Courtney wore every emotion openly. Throughout the ceremony and long into the speeches, tears appeared again and again. Yet every time they did, someone nearby offered reassurance, a hug or a hand on her shoulder. Watching that support unfold naturally became one of the most moving parts of the day.

After the ceremony, confetti filled the air before everyone gathered for hugs, laughter and congratulations. Then, as the afternoon settled into a relaxed pace, we wandered away for a few quiet portraits together.

Although I’ve photographed more than sixty weddings at The Plough & Barn, I’m always searching for a fresh perspective. One image in particular became my favourite from the day. Framed through the doorway of the barn, Crystal and Courtney stand together surrounded by the beautiful Kent countryside beyond. I love the composition. More importantly, I love what it represents. For a few peaceful minutes, they escaped the excitement and simply enjoyed being together as newlyweds before returning to everyone waiting inside.

Their portraits perfectly reflected their personalities. Rather than creating dramatic poses, we spent our time laughing, chatting and letting moments happen naturally. They teased one another, smiled constantly and looked completely at ease. Those genuine interactions created photographs that feel timeless because they are unmistakably them.

You don’t have to perform

You don’t need to be good at photos. You can just be yourselves.

I’ll look after the photography, so you can enjoy your day and look amazing.

In the months leading up to the wedding, our conversations had been just as relaxed. Crystal and Courtney told me their story, talked me through the photographs that mattered most to them and shared what they wanted their day to feel like. They later said that talking to me felt like talking to someone they’d known for years. Knowing they felt that comfortable with me made the photographs we created together even more meaningful.

Why This Same-Sex Wedding at The Plough & Barn at Leigh Stayed With Me

Before the wedding breakfast, Courtney’s sister, Jade, welcomed everyone with a line that instantly brought the room to life.

“Please welcome the newest gays in the village!”

The entire barn erupted with applause, cheers and laughter. Crystal and Courtney walked into the room with their hands held high, smiling from ear to ear. It was funny, heartfelt and completely authentic. More importantly, it reflected something I’d noticed throughout the day. Nobody wanted them to be anything other than themselves.

That same feeling continued during the speeches. Courtney’s emotions returned as family and friends shared stories full of love, humour and encouragement. Looking around the room, it was impossible not to notice how invested everyone was in their happiness. Every speech felt personal, and every guest celebrated alongside them.

One of my favourite moments from this Same-Sex Wedding at The Plough & Barn at Leigh happened before the speeches had even begun. Courtney’s family were trying to get a slideshow of her growing up ready to play, but slow internet had other ideas. So, instead of standing back, I helped them find the best spot to download it using The Plough’s Wi-Fi. During all the excitement, Courtney’s mum quietly picked up my phone, convinced it was hers. Neither of us realised until a few moments later, and we both burst into laughter. She turned out to be quite the stealthy thief!

It’s a tiny moment that will never appear on the wedding timeline, but it’s exactly the kind of genuine interaction that makes me feel part of the day rather than simply the person taking the photographs.

Even the smallest details reflected Crystal and Courtney’s story. Their beautiful cake featured miniature figures of their beloved dogs, Finley and Frankie, proudly standing on top. It was a lovely reminder that they, too, were part of the family and deserved their place in the celebration.

As evening arrived, the atmosphere shifted effortlessly from emotional to energetic. The dance floor quickly filled with guests who had spent the entire day cheering, laughing and celebrating together. It never felt like two separate parts of a wedding. Instead, it felt like one continuous celebration that simply gathered more energy as the hours passed.

By the end of the day, I felt I knew Crystal and Courtney far better than when we started. From our first conversations to the laughter, tears and little unexpected moments on the wedding day, they’d made me feel part of their story. It was a privilege to be trusted with something so personal, and to help them remember not just how their wedding looked, but how it felt. After the wedding, Crystal and Courtney sent me a review that I’ll always treasure. Their words meant so much to me, because they captured exactly what I hope every couple feels when they’re in my care.

“As a same-sex couple, not everyone is naturally warm or comfortable, but Terence was absolutely incredible with us. We felt seen, respected and celebrated.”

That’s exactly how every couple deserves to feel. Those words are something I’ll always treasure. Because, at the end of the day, that’s exactly how every couple deserves to feel on their wedding day. Whether I’m photographing a Same-Sex Wedding at The Plough & Barn at Leigh or anywhere else in Kent, my goal remains the same: to tell your story honestly, honour your relationship and create photographs that feel unmistakably like you.
