It is one of the most hotly anticipated part of any wedding reception. And a huge cause of nerves for one particular man. It is the best man’s speech! The chance for the groom to fall under the spotlight and have one or two jokes made at his expense. The speech may seem to come easily to some best men… but for others it can cause sleepless nights and plenty of stress. If you are finding yourself struggling to think of the perfect speech. We have put together some of our top tips to consider on How to write a best man’s speech!
Timing is key
No-one wants to wait for a 30 second speech, but equally there are not many people who want to listen to 20 minutes of rambling. The ideal length of time for a best man’s speech is the 5 minute mark, and they should never be longer than 10 minutes. You will need to keep in mind any mishaps, cheering or breaks for laughter to die down, as these can add in time.
Know your audience
Everyone expects a best man’s speech to be a little on the naughty side. But if you are presenting to lots of children, or some easily offended older folk, then keep this in mind. Not only may you offend some people, but you may also upset the bride or groom, which is the last thing you will want to do.
Don’t force funny
In the most part the best man’s speech is usually pretty funny. But if you are finding that the laughs are hard to come by, then never force them. Instead focus on telling funny stories instead of cracking jokes, or maybe make your speech a little emotional instead?
Have someone listen to it
You may dread the thought of having someone listen to your speech before it is ready, but this can be a big help. Whether it is one of the ushers, the bridesmaids or simply your own partner… get them to time you as well as tell you any parts that they really don’t think work!
Ultimately, you really just need to relax. Nerves are natural, but if they get in the way of you enjoying the moment then this is a real shame. No matter if you make a mistake or start blubbing, no-one will really mind, after all, chances are, by the time your speech comes around, they will have had quite a few glasses of wine, which will make everything seem all the funnier!
